When Melvin Peters stumblers across an apalling murder in his own basement mortuary, he can’t help but take it personally, both because the victim is an old enemy and well, this is Melvin’s territory. Besides, this guy was supposed to already be dead, the clue being he was in a mortuary. 
Not long bereaved, Melvin is doing everything he can to avoid dealing with his loss, and leaps at the chance to distract himself by solving the case, one that will place him on a collision course with, among others, his school bully and perennial thorn in the flesh, Charles Cotter.
Janice Evans, who Melvin once snogged at a school disco, is the detective assigned to the case. When Janice declares Melvin’s workplace a scene of crime and places everything out of bounds, “clients” included, Melvin can see his already flat-lining business collapsing, sucking the rest of his life with it. It’s now imperative to him that he helps unlock the mystery, thereby giving himself a fighting chance of staying afloat, but what will be the cost to himself, his friends, and his family?
