About Steve

Steve Grant is a retired IT professional living in Berkshire with varying numbers of children, grandchildren and dogs. He is married to an extraordinary, if shrinking, woman and is blessed in too many ways to count.

He writes crime fiction and fantasy, with a particular fondness for flawed characters, dark humour and people making spectacularly poor decisions.

His latest novel, Mortified, introduces Melvin Peters, a widowed funeral director whose life becomes considerably more complicated when a body in his mortuary turns out to have been murdered. It's the first in the Melvin Peters Mysteries, a series of contemporary British crime novels set in the fictional Berkshire town of Neringdon.

Steve stumbled into writing while learning Italian. To practise the language, he began writing short accounts of his life and work for native Italian speakers to correct. When several readers suggested that his stories were entertaining enough to publish, he decided to give writing fiction a go.

An enthusiastic reader of crime fiction, he particularly enjoys the work of Belinda Bauer, Mick Herron, Ian Rankin, Donna Leon, Andrea Camilleri and Federico Maria Rivalta.

These days he walks dogs, writes novels, and genreally bumbles along.

It has been said of Steve, much like William in False Tidings, that he likes people in theory.
